Two one-hour classes for 7th graders about how the brain works. We started out with the professor handing out a sheet two weeks prior to the class. The sheet had a fun quiz and space for kids to submit their questions to me.
On the day of the class, we went through most of the parts of the brain that are relevant to behavior (amygdala, hippocampus, HPA-axis, dopamine system, pre-frontal cortex, insula and anterior cingulate), representing each as a cartooned animal character.
Every kid asked questions, drawing from their lives. One girl’s comment: “So, if I understand correctly, if the Goat (amygdala) freaks out, it all goes haywire?” She got it!
